Rotten Love (Levy) Music Review

written/reviewed by Kenny Anderson

Who is Levy you ask? Exactly. Why haven't you heard of them? Could they be just another group of posers from the LES? Could they be just another Coldplay rip-off act playing into this so called genre "indie rock"? Of course not!

After seeing Levy on the line-up for SXSW 2006, I checked out their free download "Rotten Love". I planned on checking them out live, but, fortunately for myself, Clap Your Hands was playing the BBC Radio show downstairs at the same time. In any case, I thought "Rotten Love" was a cute enough song to keep in my ipod for awhile, so there it stayed, and, with time, it began to grow on me somewhat. It got to the point where I decided to check out some of their other stuff. Surely, "Rotten Love" was just a mediocre track on a much better album...surely?

I found the band on myspace, the essential location for a quick look at a band you may or may not be interested in. I added them as friends, and listened in horror at the rest of their "songs"... Or as I like to call them, un-original pussy ballads. I kept them on my friends list anyway. Who knows? Maybe Levy would eventually post a good tune. Plus, having tons of myspace friends makes you look really, really cool.

rating: 2.1 out of 10

Eventually, Levy posted a message saying they had released a new "song". After listening to the repeating, clean electric guitar slam for about 2 minutes, I realized this was my chance to offer some constructive criticism. I posted a comment stating "sounds like Coldplay".

Later that day, deciding to actually give the song a full listen, I returned to their myspace page, and noticed that my comment had been deleted. What?! They deleted my comment but kept all the comments from people saying they LIKED the song? What kind of loser-ass dumbfucks who sound exactly like that X&Y shit can't take a truthful comment about their cop-out guitar slamming?

the singer looks like a homo

I posted yet another comment saying, "did you just delete my Coldplay comment?" minutes later the band replied saying they did, deleted my new comment, and blocked me! Wow! I was actually somewhat interested in listening to their songs until now. I had given them a 2nd and even a 3rd chance...and they blocked me for telling them they sound like Coldplay? God forbid anyone actually REVIEWS their music! Exactly. This is the Rotten Love review sucka.

On to the EP/album...Rotten Love. Yes, it's true, "Rotten Love", the song I thought was likely their half-decent love ballad track 8 on the cd, was, in fact, the title track of the album itself. This is going to be a rough review.

Rotten Love opens up in a flash. They come right at you with the cliched 4/4 drum...now add piano...now add lead electric riff combo. As the singer comes in it gets a little better, as he sings about his highschool love that lied to him and cheated on him. How original. Of course, the instruments all cut out about halfway through for the neato changeup/chorus. Other than that, of course, nothing at all changes, besided the wicked guitar solo outro which is naturally the same over-used riff used throughout. In short, sounds like Blink 182 singing a Mancino song. And it had so much potential!

The second track, "Matthew", is the exact same thing with a slightly slower tempo. Not gonna waste my time again. Skip.

Here comes the 3rd track...Jesus, at least Coldplay has a singer with a strong voice. But, a valiant attempt. It is always bizarre when a new band comes out and goes straight into middle-of-the-road mediocrity like this for their first album. The double-tracked vocals about this girl we're all supposed to care about isn't universal enough for MOR songs, unfortunately. So medicority doesn't even work here. It's obvious by only the 3rd track that the singer is a real loser. First his highschool sweetheart cheated on him, then he can't afford a bus ticket, and now he is too afraid to go home with a girl he just met. Sensitive or fag-butt? You decide.

The horrendous album begins to slow down and speed up during the next two tracks, the only salvation being the not-TOO-bad drummer during "Rivka"...until the title track, "Rotten Love". This is, as expected, the only worthwhile track on the album. Although, again, it contains much cliched themes and sounds, it is very catchy with a few original lines. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and the band can tell they scored with this one. It's not a bad song and they know it, but it's really just too bad they threw together a shit EP around it. We'll see what the future brings for this band, but simply releasing a single could have saved them some face one day.

I will not waste any more of our time reviewing this garbage. The album ends, expectedly, with a bunch more Coldplay songs. The worst being the atrocious, abomination of an acoustic track, "Wednesday", which makes Chris Martin sound like John Lennon.

In conclusion, if you want some substance to your music, skip Levy. If you want something fresh and original, skip Levy. If you hate repetetive, over-used themes and guitar riffs, skip Levy. If Coldplay is your favorite band...you still might want to skip Levy. But, if you are a barely middle class poser from the lower east side of New York, wear "trendy" pants, and only listen to "cool" music...yep... skip Levy.

where the hell are you from?

If you, as a listener, don't recognise the unique vision and genius of levy...you need to step out of the disco and into the world. Find me another band that is writing SONGS, the dirty word that is not a trend or a fashion statement. stop being bitter and write something better if you can. they will be remembered and, happily, you will not.

Hmmm...

I tried out LEVY, but I agree, they really sound a lot like Coldplay, and the tunes don't seem creative enough for me, but I wouldn't call them "gay pussies" or anything, I'm guessing you were mad about the myspace thing. Grow up.

Yikes!

I think that you shouldn't be such a hater. Your pride is getting in the way of your objectivity. It undermines the credibility of this review. LEVY is an aspiring band trying to generate positive buzz, and its MySpace not the NYTimes. What did you expect? Don't take it so personally.

i am so sick and tired of every wannabe music critic comparing music to coldplay. it's getting ridiculous! LISTEN next time instead of jumping to conclusions. you even admit to skipping songs! how can you give an honest opinion if you don't give it a chance. if you don't like the band, that's fine. just don't ruin everyone else's chance by giving half-assed comparisons. instead of just saying they all sound the same, why not DESCRIBE how they sound so people actually get an idea.

actually, better off you don't.

in conclusion, if you want to criticize music, listen to it. if you want to compare bands, listen to them. and if you want to make some sort of statement, don't be hypocritical. your review is cliched and you repeat yourself many times too, my friend.

Very Bizarre

Is this even a review? Or just sheer anger over something on myspace? You obviously seemed to have liked them somewhat b4 the myspace thing you are freaking out about. The entire entry makes no sense.

Re: Very Bizarre

Oh, I'm sorry...did you mistake livejournal for some sort of venue for posting serious & thoughtfully critical reviews? It's a fucking weblog for fuck's sake. A weblog is where you post "opinions", which is all any criticism is. Don't give me bullshit about standards in art, because they don't exist. There are no rights & wrongs when it comes to art. THAT-IS-WHY-IT-IS-ART. You want rights & wrongs? Go talk to the church. They'll be happy to fill your mind with lies. If Anderson wants to lambast some sad bastard music about a guy who can't get over a HIGH SCHOOL relationship, then it's his prerogative. And, oops! It's his blog, too.

And that's right. I used "fuck" as two completely different parts of a sentence IN the same sentence. Deal.

I've read this far, and I've had it. You people are ridiculous. I'm not going to respond to all of these comments. So "Nate", you get the brunt.

Did none of you read the last few thousand comments? Oh, I'm sorry. I'm exaggerating. It wasn't a few thousand. That would be like finding it necessary to keep posting a comment over & OVER, spewing the same whiny "Ihateyouforcriticizingmyfavoriteband" bile. Did we really need the repeats? If you had something more relevant to say, sure. But after the twentieth comment, I think Anderson gets your point. You like Levy. Yay. You hate Anderson. Whoo. Talk about jerking yourself off in the shower.

Did Anderson get upset? Yes. Does he have a right? Yes. You know why?

Because those guys ARE pussies if they can't take one critical comment on their page. Who gives a flying FUCK if someone posted something negative on their page? If everyone else is saying how great they are, and there is one critical comment, at least you get some sense of credulity. Sugar-coating & "cleaning up" their page for the masses makes these guys as bad as all the rest of the commercialized crap out there. If that's where they want to be, fine, continue on, "you guys are doin' a great fuckin' job."

What's worse, is that if Anderson is truthful in his telling of the story, I fail to see how saying that they sound like Coldplay in his original comment is a bad thing. Perhaps he's sugar-coating the original comment to make himself look better on his blog, but, oh, gee, I guess we'll never know because THEY DELETED IT.

To be perfectly honest, I could care less what Anderson thinks of the band himself. I form my own opinions, and they aren't dictated by my what my friends think. However, thanks to Levy's conduct and, especially, the ever-so-mature comments of their fans, my opinion is pretty well ruined, and I am no more inclined to check out their music after reading Anderson's post, and less inclined after reading your comments.

And I swear if I see one more shithead comment like this left anonymously with not even a name...

You people are a real piece of work. Blow me. And to follow in the footsteps of Levy, I'll be deleting the comments you will undoubtedly leave to tell me what a bitch I am. Save yourself the time, because I already know. Go listen to Levy in the shower. In fact, take the entire stereo system into the shower with you.

And have a nice day.

You just need more loving and less envy!

This is so NOT about music.

This is NOT about Levy. This is about you. You are lonely.

You are sitting in front of your computer now, listening to
Rotten Love and fantasizing about James (Why else would you have
his picture up??!) Then you get angry and write nonsense disguised
as “constructive criticism.” As you nervously bite your fingernails, you
really hope that your “review” will get their attention.

Well you got my attention. And this is what you’ll do:

1) Put on Rotten Love, jump in the shower, and masturbate.
2) Get dressed for once and leave your house.
3) While you are out and about tonight talk to some boy or a girl or both.
4) MAKE OUT! It’s the best.
5) Feel another person, smell their hair, get lost in their eyes.
6) Truly allow yourself to experience pleasure and the positive energy that surrounds you.

When you come home the next day, you will not envy Levy anymore.
You will accept the fact they are creative guys that live and love in the best city in
the world! They have many great friends and fans that support them.

When you finally open your mind and let somebody else unzip your pants, then you can truly hear the music:

Levy @ Sin-e in NYC.

LEVY

So I'm not going to go check out levy. I'll simply trust your judgment of the group as a bunch of self-concious coldplay ripoffs. Also I don't really care for coldplay in the first place so i don't think it would do much for me. Thanks for the heads up on the thumbs down.

Review

Man, I totally agree with you. Levy are a bunch of queer-ass wannabe's who SOUND LIKE COLDPLAY. If Levy can't handle the fact that they themselves are "riding the coattails" of Coldplay, like a previous comment has alleged for andersonenvy, then they shouldn't put their queer-ass band profile on a public space like myspace. Go guitar, go.

Re: Review

How self-loathing must LEVY be to consider being likened to Coldplay as an insult. They obviously are huge fans of the band. It's just weird. Coldplay aren't my thing but it's not like I'd be embarassed to say I like them if I did. I think LEVY should grow some balls and own up to their tastes.

All of you LEVY fans that posted here -- c'mon, admit it, they acted like real douchbags in this case.

Re: Cartoon Review

Yeah, I saw Levy a few weeks ago and was very underwhelmed. Maybe the songwriter has some brilliant lyric, but I just couldn't get past the same-y music. People here need to cool down and let you rant if you want to rant. I think many more people will agree with you than the comments reflect.
